UT Apparel Design Program, Annual Fashion Show, “Innovation”
A professionally produced Fashion Show and Exhibition organized by students under faculty guidance. The University of Texas, School of Human Ecology, Division of Textiles and Apparel’s Fashion Show and Exhibition, is a well-attended event. Over the last thirteen years attendance has grown considerably from 500 in 1997 to 5,000 in 2010.

The University Co-operative Society under the guidance of President and CEO Mr. George Mitchell sponsors the event. This enables the school to stage a professional standard event. When asked why the Co-op continued to sponsor the event and what he liked best about it, Mr. Mitchell said, “I like the creativity, and I like the fact that it always gets bigger and better. It’s a professional phenomenon. I get prouder and prouder every year. They’re fabulous!” “The professionalism of the show is just fantastic! You’d think it was New York City. The runway, the professional models, the design students, its just everything about it!”

The apparel design students will present ninety-six original designs on the runway. Opening with game day dresses in a burnt orange theme, followed by individual collections that include inspiration from the following: The Outdoors Man, Henley Regatta, Geometry, and Nature to name a few. The students are embracing technology and using sustainable fabrics, designing digital prints, creating laser cut patterns and working with textured knits. Then they will present evening and bridal gowns. “I appreciate that many of the students are not doing Traditional bridal wear with white dresses,” said Jessica Ciarla, designer and owner of CIARLA bride. Lauren Polt, designer and owner of Chicka-d said: ”I love how they all used interesting techniques such as using LED lights.”

Prizes will be awarded for Best Fashion Collection, Most Innovative Fashion Collection, Most Marketable Fashion Collection, Best Constructed Fashion Collection and Best Evening/Bridal Gown. The pre-show exposition will include work from all aspects of the Textiles and Apparel Program including computer-aided design, retail merchandising, and a special exhibit from the Historical Textile Collection.

“The academic and extracurricular components of our program combine to create a powerful path towards the realization of our goals.
